About Amir Siddiq
My Story
I am an associate professor at University of Aberdeen, where I am leading my own research group on structural integrity; data driven finite element methods; machine learning based materials modelling; digital twins for high pressure and wind energy systems; advanced manufacturing; and degradation & failure in corrosive environment.

Currently, I am working on several industrial projects funded by Shell, Chevron, and NZTC. Previously, I worked at University of Strathclyde (UoS) and Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC), where I worked on simulating advanced manufacturing processes funded by BOEING, Rolls Royce plc, Barnes Aerospace, Timet, Aubart & Duval. Before this I worked at Robert BOSCH GmbH, SKF GmbH, Max-Planck Institute for Metal Research, KAUST, University of Sheffield, and NED University.
I have been involved in developing undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programmes of international repute, such as subsea engineering, advanced mechanical engineering and renewable energy engineering. I am deputy programme lead for UG mechanical engineering. I have developed several UG and PG modules (offshore structural integrity, renewable wind energy, etc.). My wind energy course is one of the most in-demand course with over 200 PG students registered during 2021-22 session. My passion for student learning and teaching has earned me 5 nominations and one win for the Best Lecturer Award so far.
If you catch me outside of work, I’m a competitive cricketer – played in several leagues. I have won a number of awards including best all-rounder award during 2007-2008 playing for Sheffield University Staff Cricket Club.
I believe in education for all and hence founded Professor 3MEC which is striving to help students and engineers learn about mechanical engineering, materials science and computational mechanics.
I have over 20 years of industrial, research and teaching experience in the UK, Germany, Middle East and South Asia. I have published over 80 articles in leading journals and conferences (h-index: 21 Google Scholar) with the highest impact factor of ~8.
Competencies: Finite Element Analysis, FORTRAN, ABAQUS, Python, Machine Learning, Materials Modelling, Advanced Manufacturing, Crystal Plasticity, Data Driven FEM, Metals, Composites, Fracture Mechanics, Higher Education
Feedback & Reviews
Below are some of the feedback and reviews from my students and collaborators. For more reviews and feedback, please checkout my linkedIn profile.
“Dr Siddiq acted as my academic supervisor for my Renewable Energy Engineering MSc. I am very grateful for his support and expertise in Abaqus software, FEA and Wind Energy. Without his help I would not have been able to successfully complete me dissertation project.”

“I’ve had the pleasure of working on projects with Dr Amir during his courses in both “Subsea Integrity” and “Pipelines” at Aberdeen University. Above all, I was impressed by his ability to break down problems using basic and simple engineering mechanics. That skill often takes years to develop, and won’t be possible if not for his extensive knowledge in academia and expertise in the subject matter.”

“I have known Amir for almost 10 years now and had the opportunity to collaborate with him during my Project work in University of Strathclyde. We worked together investigating the formability of Aluminium alloys by Incremental Sheet Metal Forming (ISF) process by experimental and Finite Element (FE) analysis. Based on the work, we could publish four peer reviewed publication. He was always available for discussion on the project topics despite his busy schedule in University. His knowledge in FE modelling of materials deformation from nano-scale to multi scale is extremely good. The results he produced during the project work were of highest quality in deformation and failure in ISF produced parts and their fracture initiation during forming.”
